The Hive Lodge has a rich and unique history to it. A skeleton was built sometime in the 1950’s. It was originally intended to be a school lending to some of the commercial features such as a double bathrooms and drains in the concrete flooring downstairs. Can you imagine coming to school here? The entire upstairs(some of which is still unfinished and not accessible at this time is a mirror. One side meant for girls and the other side for boys. It was originally a part of the Ol Gun Range above; the property spanned one hundred acres with a four mile trail system as well.
The Ol' Gun Range has a long and unique history. It was built sometime in the 1950’s. Originally a part of the school house, which is now The Hive Lodge below, the property spanned one hundred acres with a four mile trail system. The Swain County Sheriffs department also used the Gun Range to train and equip their officers. Every once in a while you can still find a shell that resurfaces from the ground. Targets at different distances once lined the concrete walkways, while the sound of the gun fire would reverberate through the mountain valley.
Bill and Mary Roberts took over the property in the mid 1980’s and began construction to turn this into a livable dwelling. Half of the upstairs was finished along with the lower level. Much of the work on the structure was completed by Tommy Ashe, a local Pastor in the area. The Roberts used the facility for family vacations and hosting their church groups as well. The Roberts also constructed the pond below which used to be the resting place for a barn; pre 1950’s. It is told that while construction on the barn took place the family lived under the giant rock to the right of the driveway and up the hill. The rock is visible in the winter months but is not on our property so please only view from the driveway.
Bill and Mary Roberts took over the property in the mid 1980’s and began construction to turn this into a livable cabin. The entire living room area was added on and the kitchen opening, which used to be a place to fire the guns, is now a great way to entertain guests. The entire structure was completed, including the beautiful woodwork, by Tommy Ashe, a local Pastor in the area. The shell of the schoolhouse below was also turned into a large lodge used by the Roberts Family for many, many years.
